Seminars as a Guide to Studying in the US

Will Zhang
Marketing Manager, Events

As Marketing Manager for EduGlobal Events, I see a lot of students who come to different activities for different reasons. Some come to meet visiting professors or to gain an understanding in how to succeed in Graduate School in the UK. But one of the most important seminars we regularly hold is the Introduction to Studying in the US seminar. Students attending these seminars know that there are many unique opportunities and challenges in the US, but their knowledge often ends there.

Applying to the US

Beginning with the selection and application process itself, graduate and undergraduate programs in the US can be very different from those in the UK, Canada and Australia. During our introduction seminar, we must explain this to them. We have to be sure they understand that each institution has its own standard application system, and that each has special requirements and admissions conditions that may go far beyond test scores. In an ideal seminar, my colleagues and I are able to explain this more thoroughly than even the institutions themselves.

Selecting the Right Institution

Parents and students know only a few US institutions, like Harvard, MIT and UCLA. They consult ranking information frequently, and know little to nothing about the differences between private and public, community college or liberal arts, or even college and university. To make the right choice, they need to understand these choices and the opportunities that lie within each. This is also something we’re able to clarify in a seminar.

Parents and students who rely solely on rankings to make their decisions will find themselves confused. After our seminars, however, they often often realise the misconceptions they had before, and they become much more knowledgeable and confident in their preparations for studying in the US.

Therefore attending these introductory seminars is a very important step for parents and students to gain as much information possible in a face-to-face context. Correct knowledge will help parents and students together make the correct decision while empowering them to succeed in selecting and applying to their best-fit institution.
